Jena Talks about Sucker Punch

When you've read the post regarding her biography (check this out jena-malone-in-sucker-punch) you'll know that its worthwhile to read on what she said about Sucker Punch in an interview with Jason Barr:

Collider: I’ll like to start off by asking how you got involved with the project initially.

Jena Malone: I auditioned like I think everyone else. I think he was just trying to find the right energy by bringing five women together in the room. I auditioned once and then I came in again and met with Zack and that was it. I feel that as soon as we met each other we were like “This is going to be amazing.”

So what was your reaction when you first read the script?

Malone: It was hard to know because I feel like so much of it is visually in his mind in the sense of how these worlds come together, you know like, with the music, and there are so many different characters that aren’t necessarily on the page. It was a little bit hard to grasp some of it but the most amazing thing that was easy to grasp was that every character was such a three-dimensional character which sort of breaks the genre. I feel that within the genre people stop asking the questions that you normally ask with a film so you end up with very one-dimensional characters and I don’t think Zach was interested in doing that at all. He kept asking all of the important questions and he just kept building, building, and building these characters. These women are vulnerable, sensitive, angry, violent, beautiful, and kick-ass. You know, as women are. We are so many different things and it’s so beautiful to see that on the page. Particularly written by two men, you know, they got it. They’ve been watching.

Speaking of being angry, violent, and beautiful, what is it like being in this gritty, violent film with a primarily female-driven cast? Like you said, its kind of outside of genre and very original. Was that something that appealed to you?

Malone: For sure. Anytime a film asks you to do a thing that you’ve never done in real life or that you’ve thought about it’s amazing. But when it asks you to do twenty of those things you are just kind of flabbergasted. You’re like, “Really? You believe I can actually do these things that are in the script. Be these different women and also be a real human amongst all these crazy extremes? This is really what you are asking?” It was just amazing and I feel that as a young woman it’s a really beautiful thing when people put that belief in you: that you can actually wield a gun respectably, honorably, and with power; that you can actually defeat twenty men in four minutes. They trained us to have that confidence and it’s really amazing.

That’s a great segue into my next question, I was hoping you could talk a little bit about the training you had to do for the film. I heard that it was pretty intense and a lot was expected of you physically.

Malone: Yeah. Definitely. Emily, Abby, and I did three months. Jaime and Vanessa came in at the end of the second month and we just kept training for eight months. We had amazing Navy Seals that were basically our physical trainers and our nutritionists. Then we had Damon Caro’s amazing stunt team. We would do four to six hours of martial arts in the morning then we would have a forty-five minute juice break followed by an hour and a half of physical strength training. In the first week I felt like Jello. I mean literally. I didn’t even realize I could do these things, but by the end of it I was doing like five pull-ups in a row and doing dead-lifts of like 235 lbs. I became, like, a complete and utter beast. I just was craving it, you know?

Yeah, there’s no way I’m doing five pull-ups in a row…

Malone: Well, I probably can’t do them now. I could probably do two.
That’s two more than me. I know we’re short on time, so this will be my last question. The general public doesn’t know a lot about the film right now, so I would like to talk about the character you play, Rocket. Can you elaborate on her and describe her arc in the film?

Malone: Sure. Well, she’s a mental patient in this institution. Her older sister, Sweetpea (Abbie Cornish), is also there. Baby Doll (Emily Browning) comes into the situation at the institution and Rocket gets sort of the lucky job of showing her around and showing her the ropes. Soon, I get drawn into this mysterious stranger who comes to join us and she has these escape plans that are also very tantalizing to us because there’s so much, you know, being forced against us that I sort of corral our friends in the institute. We try to escape and it’s basically, I mean in a really odd summary, it’s almost like a “prison break” film, with females.

Jena Malone in Sucker Punch

Jena Malone, another cutesy goody two shoes girl like Emily and Abbie, her co-stars in the film. Though she may have played nice girl roles in films but in real life she's got some hard balls. Just read on below when she sued her own mother and sought emancipation from her and she won, that's tough and smart.

I also remember her in the movie Cheaters where she played a high school girl driven by the need to win cheated in an academic competition, usual right? but here's something new, in the movie they were aided by their teacher-coach. The teacher goes so far as to help them organize their cheating tricks and drill them to practice using it. But this post isn't about Cheaters so lets go ahead and introduce Jena Malone.

Biography
Jena Malone was born on November 21, 1984 in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, where she lived until she was ten.  She credits her mom's own acting experience in community theater in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, as a major influence.

Jena persuaded her mother to move to L.A. After doing various commercials and music videos, Malone made her feature debut at the Cannes Film Festival in Showtime's "Bastard Out of Carolina," which was directed by Anjelica Huston and based on the bestselling book by Dorothy Allison. She went on to play major roles in other movies including Contact, Stepmom, and For Love of the Game.

After a year in L.A., Jena moved to New York, and attended the Professional Children's School in New York City after years of being taught at home.

In January 2000, Jena won a lawsuit against her mother whom she accused of "squandering" money from her bank accounts and mismanaging her career (charging mismanagement of her earnings, failure to pay taxes, and seeking emancipation). She has now attained emancipation from her mother who is now barred from interfering with Jena's career and earnings..

In her future, Jena sees a possible career as a director or screenwriter, because she says she would like to learn from each movie she takes part in. In her more immediate future, besides acting, she has said that she definitely wants to go to college. She either wants to study literature or business.

Abbie Cornish as Sweet Pea

Abbie Cornish as Sweet Pea, the character name couldn't be less descriptive of this actress. I saw her movie Bright Star and she was perfect in it though I had to watch it in installments 'cause I keep falling asleep every 20 minutes into the film. She has such a good girl image in reality and in the roles she choose to play in so it would be a nice twist to see in a bad-ass character.

Here goes Abbie Cornish biography. (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abbie_Cornish)

Cornish, who has been a vegetarian since she was 13, in 2008 was named Australia's sexiest vegetarian.[17]

Vanessa Hudgens in Sucker Punch

Vanessa is truly and actress, so effective that when she started to show her true colors, a direct opposite of the character she plays in High School Musical, we were all numb with shock. A lot wouldn't even think it true. How can a meek Gabriella be in reality that girl in those racy pictures.

We all get too submerged in a movie sometimes we fail to recognize the reality from fantasy and when those two things don't match, we get scandalized.

Let's just move on.

Vanessa's unadulterated biography follows: (source: http://en.wikipedia.org)

Hudgens garnered prominence with her portrayal of the fictional character Gabriella Montez in the High School Musical series.[4] She earned critical acclaim for her role in the 2009 film Bandslam.[5] During this time nude self-taken images were released to the public, purportedly sent to boyfriend Zac Efron. Another incident of nude images, this time taken with a camera phone, arose a few years later.
Hudgens's debut album V was released on September 26, 2006. The album entered the Billboard 200 at number twenty four,[6] and was later certified Gold. Hudgens released her second album, Identified, on July 1, 2008 in the U.S.

Early life and career

Hudgens was born in Salinas, California, and lived all over the West Coast – from Oregon to Southern California – with her parents, Gina (née Guangco), who held a succession of office jobs, and Gregory Hudgens, a firefighter.[2][3] She was raised Roman Catholic[7] and has a younger sister, Stella Hudgens, who is also an actress. Emily Browning the Actress with the leading role in Sucker Punch

Emily is just so beautiful. I was looking for a picture of her without any make up or less make up and in the picture I found she still looked so pretty. Compared to her costars in Sucker Punch, its obvious why she has the lead role. Go to article http://suckerpunchzacksnyder.blogspot.com/2010/07/cast.html to see what I mean.

A biography of her taken from http://en.wikipedia.org follows.

Emily Jane Browning (born 7 December 1988) is an Australian actress and model, known for her role as Violet Baudelaire in the 2004 film, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events and as Anna Ivers in the 2009 film, The Uninvited. She won the 2005 AFI International Award for Best Actress for her role in A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Browning has won an AFI Young Actor's Award in 2002 and was nominated for the same award in 1999 and 2003. She was also nominated for Broadcast Film Critics Association Critics' Choice Award for Best Young Performer and Young Artist Awards Best Performance in a Feature Film, Leading Young Actress (both 2005).

Personal life

Browning was born in Melbourne, Victoria, the daughter of Shelley and Andrew Browning.[1] She has two younger brothers, Nicholas (eight years younger) and Matthew (nine years younger). She remains based in Melbourne, having taken a break from acting in order to complete her education at Eltham High School, where, in November 2006, she completed her Victorian Certificate of Education exams.[2]

Career

Emily Browning's acting career began at the age of eight years old when she was noticed by a classmate's father at a school play and he recommended that she pursue acting as a profession. Shortly afterwards, she won a role alongside Judy Davis in the Hallmark Television movie, The Echo of Thunder.[3] A successful career in Australian film and television productions soon followed, including The Man Who Sued God, in which she played the daughter of Billy Connolly's character. She later co-starred again with Connolly in A Series of Unfortunate Events, in which she played the role of Violet Baudelaire.[3] She has stated interest in doing a sequel of the movie A Series of Unfortunate Events although if a sequel was made, she would most likely not be cast as she has grown out of the role.
Browning had a recurring role as Hayley Fulton on the popular television series Blue Heelers from 2000 until 2002 and played the character Alicia in five episodes of Something in the Air (2000–2001). She also played Katie Harwood in the 2002 horror film Ghost Ship; the same year she won an Australian Film Institute Award for Best Young Actress, and was nominated the following year.
In 2006, Browning appeared in the music video for Evermore's "Light Surrounding You".[4] In the making of video for the clip, the band stated, "...we suck as actors, so we decided to get Emily."[5]
She attended the L'Oreal Fashion Festival as festival ambassador on 1 February 2007.[6]
In 2009 she portrayed Anna in Paramount Pictures mystery horror film The Uninvited. The film is an American remake of the 2003 South Korean horror film A Tale of Two Sisters. Browning has signed on to play the lead in Sleeping Beauty by Australian author Julia Leigh, who will also direct the film.[10]
Jamie Jilynn Chung was born 26 years ago in California. She's half America half Korean, attended the University of California, Riverside.

Here's a biography of her from http://www.buddytv.com

Jamie Chung

  Biography
Jamie Chung was born on April 10, 1983, and originally hails from her hometown of Riverside in California. A daughter of Korean heritage, she was 20 years old during her time on the show. Jamie possessed the qualities of a straightforward young woman who bluntly told things as they were, as well as being no-nonsense and in-your-face when dealing with her peers. This made her seem highly capable, if somewhat brusque and brutally honest. She is best known for being in the fourteenth season of the hit MTV reality television series The Real World, set in San Diego, California.

Chung was brought up in San Francisco by first generation parents who strictly adhered to tradition. Jamie also proved herself to be a hard worker, holding down two jobs in order to pay for her tuition, and studying diligently for her tests in school. But as busy as she kept herself with her responsibilities, she also had a reputation for partying just as hard and enjoying herself. However, her friends have said that her main fault is her taste in men. While she was very selective about the people and guys she hung out with, she still tended to overlook major shortcomings in the men that she did like.

Now, as she stars in Sucker Punch she's bound to get more publicity and other offers after the movie hits on March 2011. An article from BeyondHollywood.com follows.

Malone and Chung Join Snyder’s All-Girl Pic Sucker Punch
Sucker Punch (2011) Movie — By Nix on April 20, 2009 |
Chi Chi will go from fighting green-skinned alien dudes who wants to destroy the world to starring in Zack Snyder’s all-girl fantasy flick “Sucker Punch”. Jamie Chung, who co-starred as Chi Chi in the ill-fated “Dragonball: Evolution” has joined the ever-revolving door that is the “Sucker Punch” cast along with Jena Malone. The two lasses join a cast that currently counts among its members Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens and Abbie Cornish. Before that, Emma Stone had been in the cast, but she’ll now be replaced by Chung. Malone, meanwhile, will take over the role formerly attached to Evan Rachel Wood.
THR says Chung (pictured, below) will play Amber, a country girl with a big heart, while Malone (pictured, top left) will play Cornish’s younger sister. Like everyone else in the film, the two girls will be inmates at a mental instituion.
Browning will star as a girl who is confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternate reality to hide from the pain and in that world begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out. It’s not as ludicrous as it sounds. Oh who are we kidding. This is Zack Snyder. It sounds exactly as ludicrous as it is.
Much slow motion all-girl showering scenes ensue. One hopes.

CARLA GUGINO IN SUCKER PUNCH

Carla Gugino has been in the movie industry since 1989 and been cast in 41 movies since (including Sucker Punch and four other movies in 2010 awaiting release or in post-production stage). At 15 she was spotted by a modeling agency she moved to New York to pursue modeling but was given a hard time getting into catwalk work due to her height (5 feet 5 inches). She moved back to California where she grew up and started studying acting.

Carla Gugino to Rep the Mature Hotties in Snyder’s Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch (2011) Movie — By Nix on August 3, 2009 |
You know, I’m constantly amazed that Carla Gugino isn’t more famous than she currently is in the American mainstream. Then again, maybe it’s my mad crush on the former Karen Sisco and Threshold star that’s doing the talking. In any case, Zack Snyder apparently has no problems recognizing the uber talents of Ms. Gugino, because after casting her as Silk Spectre I in “Watchmen”, Snyder has now cast Gugino in his upcoming “Sucker Punch”, his all-girl action/fantasy movie set in a mental institution.
Gugino joins a cast that already includes Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, and Abbie Cornish. The film will be set in the 1950s, and will star Browning as a young girl confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. In order to fight back, the girl and her inmate friends fantasize an alternate reality where they begin planning their great escape. Girl showers and late-night pillow fights ensue. One can only hope.
THR says Gugino will play Mrs. Schultz, described as an adult figure at the institution, although Variety calls her character a nurse who becomes a madam at a brothel in the film’s alternate reality. Either way, she’ll end up working at the insane asylum where the film’s bevy of young hot cast are being housed because, you know, they’re kinda nuts and all. Or maybe they’re perfectly sane and it’s everyone else that are nuts, you ever think of that? These questions, and more, when “Sucker Punch” hits theaters in 2010.
Snyder and company kick off production in the fall up north in Vancouver land. Word is, the girls are currently in heavy fight training for the movie. Must be big male orderlies in need of kicking in the nads…
Below: The girls of Sucker Punch wishes they look this good when they hit their ’30s.

Nudity in Sucker Punch according to Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens says there’s not a whole lot of clothes in the movie.
Is she trying to lead us viewers on?

Vanessa Hudgens Talks Sucker Punch, Promising Nudity?

Sucker Punch (2011) Movie — By Nix on July 13, 2009
It sure sounds that way. Wasn’t all that long ago when Hudgens got caught sending nudie pics of herself to her boyfriend and oh was the blogosphere abuzz and joyous. But let’s face it, anyone seeing Zack Snyder’s R-rated “Sucker Punch” isn’t going to do it for Hudgens, it’s the promise of ridiculous and overused slow motion shots and totally pointless nudity from his lovely female cast. That’s Snyder for ya, he knows what the boys want, God bless him. According to Hudgens, she’ll be showing some skin in the movie, where she’ll be playing a ’50s-era prostitute.
Teases the former Disney good girl turned 20-year old would-be harlot to Brit mag Metro:
“I’m playing a character named Blondie and it’s set in a brothel in the 1950s, so there’s not a whole lot of clothes.”
I don’t think Metro transcripted that quote right. I’m pretty sure Hudgens added a muffled “Hee hee” to that statement. Cause, you know, she seems like the sort to do that. I could be wrong, of course.
She adds:
“It’ll be gun training, stunts, fighting and all that craziness. I can’t wait. I’m so excited. I’ve wanted to do an action film for a while. I think this is my time to really step it up and get to grow up. It will be somewhat different with the content and a few more foul words but that’s the biggest difference.”
You're definitely not grown up Vanessa if you think being a cast in a movie like Sucker Punch will mature your acting skills. Who's with me?!

Sucker Punch at the San Diego Comic-Con International

San Diego Comic-Con International, commonly known as Comic-Con is traditionally a four-day event (thrusday to sunday) with a four-hour preview night on wednesday open to professionals, exhibitors and some guests. It is held during the summer in San Diego, California, United States at the San Diego Convention Center. Comic-Con is both the name of the annual event and the common name of the organization.

It originally showcased comic books, science fiction and film/television represented by the three circled figures in Comic-Con's original logo. Over the years the convention has expanded to include large range such as horror, anime, manga, animation, toys, collectible card games, video games, web comics and fantasy novels.

When Sucker Punch was introduced at Comic Con this July, it didn't create much excitement from the crowd.

Before showing the sucker punch footage Snyder brought out the main cast Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Carla Guino and Jamie Chung. The cast mentioned how excited they were to be there specially that it was their first time to see any footage of the movie. They didn't say anything much about the movie only that they had to learn fight and dance choreography and Snyder revealed the presence of a big twist/ revelation at the end.

The crowd was all in anticipation of the footage to be shown. It lasted for 3 minutes and started with the song "When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zeppelin. There were guns, planes, Nazis, robots and dragons in the clip and resembles nothing seen before, very original.

Snyder mentioned that this is his first original project after Dawn of The Dead, 300 and Watchmen. It was impressive how over the years Snyder has evolved from being a commercial director to an original blockbuster writer/director.

ZACK SAYS NO TO SUCKER PUNCH 3D

At the Comic Conn Zack Snyder commented on the reason why Sucker Punch has not been produced with a 3D version. He said:

When we started talking about it, I had a certain idea of how I wanted to move the camera and I had a certain idea of how I wanted the film to feel. I am a fan of 3D. Legends is all 3D. It was conceived in 3D and, if anyone has seen it, I think the 3D is pretty friggin awesome, if I do say so myself. We did talk about it and, in the press, there was word that we were going to do it in 3D.
We really were considering it. But we had seen a bunch of tests and conversion didn't sit with me that great. Without being baked in, it just felt a little weird. But they also showed me a test of 300 that was pretty awesome. But it didn't feel right for this movie. It's in eye-numbing 2D, which is also awesome.
I guess what he trying to say was that the the movie is too intense in 2D that making a 3D version of it would be over the top.
I've seen the trailer and there were a lot of fast paced fight scenes viewing those on 3D would only make your eyes burn. In my personal experience I've appreciated 3D when the scene is still or in regular speed 'cause then, I can look around let my eyes adjust and see the images pop out of the screen.
Like in Avatar, I've enjoyed to see the beautiful creatures in the forest coming alive in 3D it was amazing but with the war scenes, I had to shut my eyes for seconds at a time to relieve the strain in my eyes.
So I say good call Zack!
